I would recommend tampons. If you are a virgin I would suggest looking for a smaller tampon, like I think tampax makes a slender size. My personal opinion is that plastic aplicators are better than card board.
Tampons are cleaner in my opinion. With a pad you can feel all that blood. Ucky. And you will know as soon as you leak with a tampon. With a pad, since you are already feeling wet, you could have blood all over your clothes and never know it. (This happens to just about everyone at some point, and it is embarrasing no matter your age).
The risk of TSS is very low. It is an allergic reaction and you will KNOW something is wrong if you have it. I dont think I know anyone who has ever had this reaction.
