Worried?colposcopy?!

Question:

Worried?colposcopy?

im getting a bit worried. i went to gp with some bleeding. he arranged an examination and swabs for infection, and said if swabs were clear to change contraception pill. this is what happened last time i got an erosion.

anyway had examination by nurse, who went out to have a word with dr and said he's going to refer for colposcopy, this was without even waiting for results of swabs or changing pill.

swab results back and all negative, so now im worried, is it possible for nurse to see changes in cervix with just naked eye, does that mean they would be advanced? my last smear was only 2 years ago and ive kept them up to date. how long do most people wait for referal in uk.

Answers:

Its understandable to worry but please try not to. i had an abnormal smear test 12 years ago and I had colposcopy treatment. They will have a look at the cervix first and then decide on treatment. Its done using a local anaesthetic and a laser was used to remove the abnormal cells. It is very simple and the thought of it is actually worse than the op itself. You may have slight cramp for a day or two but its very simple. I have had normal smears since and I also have had three children. If it was anything to worry about its best to get it early. Referral in UK is relatively quick but I suppose it depends on each hospital for waiting lists etc. A nurse could see inflammation with the naked eye and thats obviously why they have sent you for further investigation. Good luck
