Dealing with my period on a big hiking trip?

I was looking at the calendar and much to my dismay my next period falls right during the middle of our big hiking trip. Now I know I could just try to suck it up and deal with it, but there are a few points I'm having a hard time figuring out....

- for the first few nights I have to make many trips to the bathroom. on hiking trip I'm not going to stumbling around in the dark looking for the outhouse because there are bears, cougars, and wolves.

- we will be going about 7-9 hrs per day and there are not very many outhouses. going in the bush with no period, fine, but with...well its not so nice a thought.

- I will have to pack out all the pads etc.

- won't the smell of blood attract wild animals?

Is there a form of birthcontrolpills I could take to stop my period? Just for one time..after the hike I'll go back to having my period. Also I don't want to have to go to the doctor to get the pills. I know they are bad for your body, but just during 1 period shouldn't matter too much.

I was just researching stuff on the net...scratch the birth control pill idea..I don't want to take something that can harm me. I have a heart murmur, so it probably wouldn't be good anyhow...

Is there anything NATURAL I can do or take to help?

Got any tips on backpacking during your period?

carry pads and tampons everywhere. buy a tight hotpants and wear night pads even during the day. if u feel like u need to change stop and do so as soon as possible. another altenertive is drinking alot of red wine to push ur cycle back one week so that ull have ur period before. however this is risky since it messes up with ur cycle
