Nuvaring??!

Question:

Nuvaring??

I asked my doctor about the ring she told me that you can take it out and put a new one in the same day and you will gradually stop getting your period. I always thought you had to leave it out for a week before you can use a new one.
Does anyone else put a new one in the same day you take it out?
I would like to know before i switch to this method.

Answers:

It is possible to do it this way and you will stop getting your period because the ring will release a continuous stream of hormones into your body and not allow the uterine lining to mature and then slough off, which is what normally happens during that week you take the ring out. This would be fine for a few months. It is much the same idea as the seasonale pill - the one that only gives you 4 periods a year. However, I would not recommend that you go continuously forever without having a week in between rings. It would expose your body to a higher amount of estrogen, which would put you at a higher risk for things like blood clots and breast cancer. This risk is low, but it still exists. Your doctor gave you fine advice, but I would only go for about 3-4 months, and then take a break in between to let your body normalize the hormone levels and do what it needs to.
