Uti or what?!

Question:

Uti or what?

okay so a week ago it started burning when i pee. it wasnt really bothering me so i just ignored it (i know, not too bright) then a few days after that i started having horrible pain not only when i peed but all the time. it hurt so bad i couldnt stop shaking.. so i finally went to my doctor..they found blood in my urine and my white blood cell count was up to 500!! they sent my sample to a lab cuz they're scared it could be something other than a uti. what else could it be?? im scared and i need some answers. could my kidneys be failing? could it be a tumor? or an std?? if anyone has ever gone through this please help me!! thanks.

Answers:

It sounds like a UTI. Blood in the urine, a high white count, and burning when you pee are all signs that point to a UTI. It's normal to send a urine specimen to a lab to get better results. The stuff you can do in the office doesnt go very in depth and like you said, it sounds like they just want to be sure. I seriously doubt your kidneys are failing. You would be having many other symptoms, and they would have found protein in your pee and sent you to the hospital for more testing if that was the case. It's also not a tumor. It could potentially be an STD if you had unprotected sex. Other things to look for would be a weird, smelly discharge that you dont normally get, maybe chunky, like cottage cheese, or yellow.. something pretty gross, or weird bumps down on your private parts. If you dont have any of that, and burning when you pee is your only symptom, I wouldnt worry too much. It could also be a kidney stone. Those sometimes present like a UTI does.
It only takes a day or two to get results back from the lab, so dont worry too much. I'm sure youre fine, and it's nothing that a quick antibiotic won't help. In the meantime, put a heating bad on where it hurts, drink lots of water, and take some advil. I'm sure the doctor will be back in touch with you in no time.
