Questions about UTIs, tests, and STDs..?!

Question:

Questions about UTIs, tests, and STDs..?

After my ex joined the Navy, not long before we broke up, he told me that he had cheated on me and he didn't use protection. He told me the Navy tests for STDs so I didn't need to worry.

Over the past few months, I've had the strong urge to pee, pretty much constantly. My friends told me it was a UTI and that it would go away, though webmd says that isn't true... but it seems like it should have gotten worse by now, since it's been so long since the symptoms started, but I still don't have any pain or anything. It just stings a little when I pee. Mostly I just feel like I have to go, all the time.

Suddenly my new boyfriend has symptoms, but they're worse, he's peeing blood and is apparently in a lot of pain.

I'm going to get tested tomorrow, no matter what, but I just want to know beforehand.. does it seem like an STD or a UTI? What does an STD or UTI test involve? How long does it take to get results? Do most walk-in clinics even do STD tests?
Sorry this is so long! Thanks!

Answers:

It's probably a UTI. Most STDs have more vaginal-related symptoms, or you would notice more than just trouble urinating.

My diabetic friend had UTIs constantly. Women commonly pick them up simply from having sex and not urinating afterward. (UTIs are the reason people tell you to always urinate right after sex - here's more info: http://www.barnard.edu/wwoman/qanda/gynh... .) I think they'll simply have you do a urine test for it.

When you get done, drink lots of cranberry juice. Great for UTIs. And please tell this guy for me to stay out of your life. Only massive jerks cheat on their girlfriends without even using protection.

Oh, you're right that UTIs do not just "go away" on their own. They're bacterial and will just fester or develop other complications until you take antibiotics. You should have gone to the doctor for it a long time ago.
