So first off, during your period--what makes up your period is the lining of the uterus that is sloughed off. What triggers the lining to detach are prostalglandins. Sometimes our body overmakes these hormones, which is what causes cramping in your lower stomach and back.

Guys don't get cramps because they don't have a uterus that needs to be sloughed off...they do however, make prostaglandins which cause them pain, but just not due to period pain.
Lastly, the ingredients in IB profin and other anti-inflamatory drugs fight off the prostaglandins, so that will give you some relief.
