No, most hymens stretch enough for a tampon to get through without breaking. Once you do break it though, using tampons becomes a piece of cake. It depends though cause some hymens are really fragile, and some are really tough, like some women have sex and get pregnant without their hymens breaking, and the doctor has to surgically remove it before she gives birth, whereas other girls can break just from sitting on a bike seat. You really shouldn't worry so much about your hymen, they are really over rated. They're not useful for anything really but tampons are a godsend.
by the way, the hymen is at the opening of your vagina, and tampons are suppose to go all the way to the back, so whoever said they don't go in that far either doesn't know where a hymen is or how to use a tampon correctly
