Question:

My 8 year old girl mistakengly took microlut oral contraceptives about 4 tablets. ANy bad consequences?

My wife is scared that it could lead to her menstruating early. It's been a couple of days since she too the tabs but we've not noticed anything. what do we do?

Answers:

Call your pediatrician just to be safe (this would've been my first move), but I don't think her taking 4 capsules will lead to her menstruating early. A legitimate concern you might want to consider is why an 8 year old would attempt to ingest adult pharmaceuticals. ALL medication should not be in reach of children.

Personally, I don't see how taking 4 capsules of something can be accidental on your daughter's part, other than they may have accidentally been left out by yourself or your wife. I'm also concerned as to why there's seemingly not been communication with your daughter about taking medication on her own. Children should not take any medication not administered by an adult, and an 8 year old should be aware of this.

Many children die each year from taking adult medicines that have been left out. Please be more careful and talk with your daughter about why she shouldn't take adult medicine!

When children take medicine without supervision of an adult, in my opinion it's more negligence on the part of the parents than accidental. I have two small children of my own and have been the locking up the meds route after we had a chewable vitamin mishap. Things do happen, but if parents are conscientious it diminishes the risk of harm greatly.

Good luck!
