You usually bleed from penetration and breaking of the hymen...a thin membrane that covers your cervix. However, these days most girls have already broken that membrane due to sports, tampons, sex toys, etc.
So, it's possible to have sex for the first time and it not be so traumatic (bleeding) or painful.
