Are women's hips really wider?!

Question:

Are women's hips really wider?

Could anyone help with this question. I know they are different because of having babies but are women's hips wider as in bigger bones and the like or do they have more fat around them that makes them look bigger? Also if a man became a woman would their hips widen? So if a woman became a man would their hips alter?... Thanks for any help .Sorry for the rambling :-)

Hello Wanster,
Anna, has given the best answer so far in terms of the structural differences in the female pelvis compared to the male.

However it is not absolubte. Men can have female pelvis's and women can have male pelvis's.
A woman with a male pelvis would still have greater fat padding around the hips than a man hence still have some of the characteristic female shape although it would be less pronounced and she would likely be described as someone with 'slim hips' . They may also struggle a little in child birth and be more inclined to be offered a Ceaserian even though the pubic synthesis at the front of the pelvis widens by up to 1&1/2 inches during child birth. (Its usually not fused in men until at least 50 years old. although it generally doesn't move as easily as in women)
Men with female pelvis's look quite normal because there is less fat deposition around the pelvis so they don't have 'A bum like a woman' but their pelvis's are noticably wider and they will have a Q angle in their thighs resembling a womans configuration rather than a typical male.

If a man had a sex change the hormone injections would likely mean greater fat deposition around the pelvis giveing them the appearance of being wider but there would be no changes to the structure. The same would apply to a woman. The hormone injections would mean less fat around the pelvis giving them the appearance of being narrower but the underlying structure wouldn't change.
