Polycystic Ovaries!?!

Question:

Polycystic Ovaries!?

Hi, im 16 years old and i have been for a scan today because i suffer from very irregular periods and the doctor said i could have cysts on my ovaries, i went for my scan today and she said it looks like i have polycystic ovaries, is this serious? I am disabled, i suffer from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (a muscle wasting condition). Before i found out i had polycystic ovaries my Neuromuscular doctor said i would be able to concieve but my pregnancy and birth would need extra care, are my chances of conceiving affected because of having pcos? (not that i want children yet lol). What is the treatment for this condition if there is one?
Would love to hear your answers and advise!
Thanks! xx

Answers:

Don't worry! It's a fairly common condition that can be treated. Besides irregular cycles, some of the other symptoms can include acne, unwanted hair growth, and insulin resistance (a condition where your body doesn't use insulin as effectively).

Usually what they will do is chart your cycles and put you on a hormone pill to regulate them. They also recommend lifestyle changes such as weight loss and exercise, which help with the condition and in some cases can completely eliminate it.

Women with PCOS don't ovulate regularly, so it's more difficult for them to conceive, but not impossible. If you take the hormones and they are able to get things regulated, you should be able to be as normal as anyone else in that regard.

Good luck!!
