Did I do wrong??!

Question:

Did I do wrong??

I am very much confused and am feeling guilty as well for something which i don't know is a fault or not.I had my last periods on 5th june, and me & hubby had unprotected sex as we want to start a family. But my doc asked me to get an x-ray done (of my chest), and so I checked in E.P.T today in the morning and it showd negative. So i went and did the x-ray.But my question is suppose I get pregnant in a couplke of days, will this x-ray exposure have any effect on the baby??kindly help!!

Answers:

The following website has questions answered by qualified medical personel who are experts in radiation and it's effects. Here is what I found:

"X rays of the chest result in minimal, if any, exposure to the unborn child because the x-ray beam is directed only at the chest region. Little, if any, radiation exposes the abdominal area. Health risks to the unborn child because of x-ray exposure in your case should not be a cause of alarm or concern."

"Q: Somewhere between the fifth and ninth day of pregnancy I had three chest x rays without a lead protection apron. I did not know at the time I was pregnant and I am very concerned that the x rays may have harmed the dividing egg.

A: Medical x rays are highly collimated, that is, the beam is directed to only the part of the body being examined. Thus very little, if any, radiation reached the abdomen during your chest x rays. No effects of radiation exposure are likely."

"Radiation dose to the embryo from a chest x ray, using modern technology, is extremely small. It is, in fact, too small to measure with most instruments. It is certainly no more than the dose received in a couple of days from unavoidable naturally occurring environmental radiation (commonly called background). Although no one can state unequivocally that there is no possibility of ill effects from this small dose, the probability of such effects is extremely remote. Every person gets the natural environmental radiation dose every day."

Even 10-15 years ago, the dose for medical images was much higher than today. With improved technology (x-ray equipment, film, screen, even developing), the dose has significantly been reduced. Talk to your OB/GYN (if you find out you are indeed pregnant), as he/she can help alleviate your fears. Best wishes......
