Birth Control Question...?!

Question:

Birth Control Question...?

I'm interested in starting birth control but I'm a smoker and I hear that the two don't go together really well. Any comments or solutions? Please don't say obviously things like "Maybe quit smoking"...obviously I'm interested in other options.

Also any advice on types of BC, ones you liked or didn't, would be appreciated.

Thank you for your advice so far but I'd like to start the BC because my period is irregular, not only for safer sex.

Answers:

Alright. Interesting answers so far. From a gynecologist, basically birth control pills do increase your chance of stroke and blood clots and smoking will increase that risk w/ birth control pills. The risk of smoking and taking birth control pills has such a great risk after age 35 years old that we will not put people who smoke on the pill. If you are younger than 35 years old, we can place you on the pill. Since it's for period regulation and you smoke, it's better if you get the mini pill which is progesterone only and not estrogen. Estrogen is the hormone that will increase your blood clot and stroke risk. The mini pill for contraception is not as good as the regular pill. I would ENCOURAGE you to quit smoking.
