New to birth control....help????!

Question:

New to birth control....help????

I'm suppose to start taking birth control. I'm 21 years old and I just started my period on Sunday evening. The doctor told me that I can either do the Sunday plan where I start my pills on Sunday, or if I want the birth control to take effect more quickly, I should take it when I start my period. It's Sunday and the doctor's office will be closed. Would I still be able to get the pills tomorrow morning and start and still have the same effect? Thanks in advance!

Answers:

There are 2 options: The Sunday Start and the 1st Day Start.

Sunday start works like this: Say your period started last Friday (22nd). You start your pills on Sunday the 24th, and you use back up contraception for SEVEN full days.

1st Day Start: Your period starts on Friday, you take your first pill on Friday. You do NOT need to use backup.

If I understand you correctly, your period started Sunday (today), so the methods are one and the same for you in this circumstance. If your period started today, you can start your pills today, and you will have immediate contraceptive coverage.

If your period started LAST Sunday, you could still start your pills today, HOWEVER you must use backup contraception for SEVEN days.

If you have any further questions, you should call your doctor's office tomorrow and ask them (especially since it sounds like you don't HAVE the pills with you right this minute).
