I got the same thing when I started my first period. I had dark rusty brown spotting for about three days along with painful cramps. Then I actually started bleeding. It was so weird. The blood has been building up in the lining and it's finally probably starting to shed. Wear a panty liner the next few days and carry a pad or tampon with you just in case you actually start. When you do, you'll know.
