Can I Skip My Period Safely?!

Question:

Can I Skip My Period Safely?

I am on the nuvaring birth control. i recently read in a magazine that if you are on the pill you can skip your ring free week, and your period, and go on to the next months pills and that is safe. Is it the same case with nuvaring, i would just skip my ring free week and go on the the next months ring? It sounds like a good idea but i do not want the luxury of not having my period to hurt my body.

Answers:

Yes, that is safe.
It's possible that you could have some spotting, though. It's harmless.

There's a fascinating book called " Is Menstruation Obsolete" that talks about this.
Hundreds of years ago, women only had about 15-20 periods in their whole life, because they married young, and then were almost constantly either pregnant or lactating until they finally died in childbirth or something. Ovarian, uterine, and breast cancers were extremely rare.
The point is there's nothing "natural" about having a period every month, year after year. Nature actually intended for ovulation to be suppressed most of the time. And that's what hormonal contraception does!

Women on the pill have a lower risk of uterine and ovarian cancer, because they don't ovulate (and medically speaking they don't get a period at all -- it's called a 'withdrawal bleed'). It's too early to tell with the Nuvaring, but the same is probably true.
So, go for it.
