What causes hypothyroidism?!

Question:

What causes hypothyroidism?

I have read a lot about what happens in your body biologically when you already have an underactive thyroid.

But I'm wondering if anyone has any theories about what causes it initially. Obviously there is some kind of hereditary factor...

I have a feeling that my years of crash dieting and taking diet pills may have stuffed up my thyroid, but I have no evidence to support that and haven't read anything similar. Anyone have any stories that might shed some light?

Answers:

Nope, its not from the stuff you did. The thyroid is quick to recover, even when bodybuilders who are trying to lose weight take synthetic thyroid drugs in high doses (it shuts down your own thyroid hormone production), the thyroid is quick to recover. So no its not your fault most likely.

The main cause is genetics. Other causes include iodine deficiency which is not very common, depression, bipolar spectrum syndrome, borderline personality disorder, psychotic disorder, and ADHD.
