Spoting on Nuvaring with antibiotics?!

Question:

Spoting on Nuvaring with antibiotics?

I've been on Nuvaring for almost a year and have never had any spotting...

However I started antibiotics yesterday night (penicillin). This morning I spotted a little, but I dont take my ring out until Sunday night (and wouldnt start my period until wednesday night)

The antibiotics have a warning that they effect birth control, and I know if can reduce the effectiveness, but can they also be the reason for the light spotting? I havent had sex for two months and my last period was heavy so it cant be pregnancy related (plus that last time we used condoms on top of my being on the ring)?

Thanks!

Answers:

They not only reduce effectiveness, they pretty much eliminate it. I would guess this is happening because if you were to take the nuvaring out (or stop pills, take off patch, etc) you would start your period because this is what it is made to happen. I'd think since it is taking away the effectiveness of the nuvaring, that it would be similar to taking it out all together and would start your period. (I'm glad you read that warning because i know a lot of people that got pregnant while on antibiotics) Hope this helps!
