Help! Extra long period, my own fault! Has anyone ever done this? :(?!

Question:

Help! Extra long period, my own fault! Has anyone ever done this? :(?

Last Oct I came off the pill after 9yrs, ready to start a family with my husband. My periods were odd for a month or so & then they settled & became very regular.
In May my husband & I went away with a big group of friends for 4 days. My period was due on the Fri we were going away & I would have therefore been on for the full four day trip. I couldn't face it, knowing that it would bring a breakout of spots & weight gain & stomach cramps. So as a quick fix (I know this was wrong) I started taking the pill again a week before I went away. Once we got home I stopped taking it. A week later my period began. It continued for 3 weeks! I thought because I had messed my body around it would do this but would then sort itself. A week & a half later I started another period. I am still on that period. Most days there is just a yukky brown discharge but then now & again there will be some heavy blood loss.

I don't want to go to a doctor because I know it's self inflicted but I am worried I have messed up my body beyond repair!
Has anyone made the same mistake as I have?
Can anyone help?

Please don't anyone send any insulting replies, I have been stupid, I know I have, I don't need to be told that. :(

Thanks in advance to those of you who take the time to answer... xx

Thankyou so much to everyone who has responded so far! I am feeling much better about things than I was earlier. Feel like I'm not alone.
Thankyou :) xx

Answers:

I think the mistake you made is not starting the pill on the first day of your period. By taking it a week before you left you interfered with your cycle, so I imagine it's just your body coming back to normal and expelling the hormones you put in. It is unusual for such a long period though. For your own health I would say to go to the doc if things aren't back to normal in a couple of weeks. You are trying to conceive and want to be healthy. Your doctor won't judge you, and don't feel like you did anything stupid. It will give you and your husband peace of mind if you know it's something that'll pass quickly.
Good luck with it, and I hope you are holding a beautiful baby in your arms soon.
