Is it normal for your period to change this way from age?!

Question:

Is it normal for your period to change this way from age?

My periods used to be fairly light & last 5 days. Now the first day I just spot, the next two days are extremely heavy and the last day is really light. So in otherwords, it's much shorter & MUCH heavier! During the night I usually wake up soaked in blood!!! Plus I never used to have cramps & now I do a little & very bloated!!! I'm only 38, isn't that too young for menapause?

Hello:

Since you are 38 you are heading into what some call the "flushing forties" but not everybody experiences this. It is when you period will be very heavy compared to previous years and some women actually have to take birth control, or undergo some surgery D & C, ablation etc. because the bleeding can get out of control. Knew 2 women that had that problem - they became severely anemic because of the bleeding. From my experience the heavy bleeding only lasted for about 5 months and then things went to three days moderate to light. Now it is spotting a week before my period is due and it only lasts a day and a half. I like that last part, menopause comes after that I would guess. I will have to wait and see.

As for being too young for menopause - perimenopause can last for 10 or more years and that is probably exactly where you are at.

Good luck to you,
