Going to the gynecologists for first time?

well i am 16 and thinking of going on the pill for my cramps, i have talked to my mom, but i am so scared to go to the gynecologist! like i am in such pain during my periods but i almost rather deal then go there. please tell me its not as bad as it seems!?

Steph, unfortunately, its one thing you'll have to get used to. Make sure to find a woman, its much easier to deal with. It isnt so bad, i'll tell you what will happen.

You'll have to go in the room, get blood pressure taken and maybe your temperature. The nurse may ask you to go to the bathroom and pee in a cup.

Once all that is done, you'll have to wear a paper robe. Some GYN's like to do breast exams, some dont. You may be too young for that anyways. So you'll wear the paper gown, and you'll have another one you'll have to put on your lap. Then you wait.

You'll hear a knock on the door, and the doctor will come in. If you happen to have a male doctor, a female nurse will have to come in too, its the law. But if your doctor is a woman, then no one else will come in.

So she'll probably talk to you a bit about how you feel and stuff. Be sure to tell her everything, and write things down at home before you go too, because you'll forget everything!

She'll start the examination, first she'll have you scoot your bottom to the end of the table, so your butt is on the edge. Your feet will need to go in those feet holders (stirrups). She'll make sure you're in a good position. Btw, you're laying down too. She'll put on some gloves and she'll get a speculum. Its a long plastic thing that she'll put inside you. Then its spread apart a little, so she can see inside better. Then she'll use a qtip and a long stick thingy. That is used to very lightly scape the inside of your vagina. That will be put into a tube, and sent off to a lab, to make sure everything is ok. And, at your age, it will be. Then she'll take out the speculum.

The next part, she'll put some cold (warm if they are good, lol) jelly on her fingers and insert them into your vagina. Sometimes it doesnt feel too good. Then she'll put her other hand on your lower stomach, to try to find your ovaries, to feel them. Thats just to make sure you dont have ovarian cancer, again, almost impossible at your age.

Then, shes done! She'll give you something to clean up with, and you can get dressed. You may bleed just a tiny bit, from the scraping, but its no big deal.

Actually, painful periods are waaaaay worse than any of this. It can be embarrassing at first, but just remember, these doctors see these parts about every 15 minutes...each time a new woman. So its normal. And believe it or not, after you have your first baby, in many many years, (hint, hint) you wont care who looks at your vagina.

Also, I'm sure the 15 minutes in the doctors office will be well worth it. The pill should take your periods down to 3-5 days, and the pain will lesson too. Also, you wont need to go back for an entire year! Hey, and feel free to have your mom out of the room too, if that part is embarrassing.
