Which is more effective to help with getting better sleep - Melatonin or St; Joh!

Question: Are there any bad side effects of taking either ?

Answers: Are there any bad side effects of taking either ?

Melatonin can actually make you stay awake if taken in the wrong dose. You always start with the smallest possible dose, even cutting the pill if necessary. Do not use time release. It is naturally produced by the healthy body to induce sleep. Taking melatonin should help get your body clock reset so that you can go without after a time.

I've never heard of St. John's Wort being used for sleep. I have used of valerian being used for sleep.

As the 1st poster said, why reach for a pill? Are you having chronic sleep issues? If so, you need to get to the root cause. Don't eat too close to bedtime. Exercise late at night will overstimulate and keep you awake. For the body to produce malatonin itself you need low light, low stress evenings.

Ways to naturally induce sleep and reduce stress are:
chamomile tea with honey
Epsom salt bath at night (2 cups in your bath water)
prayer and meditation

Are you using sugar and caffeine to excess? These can keep you up at night.

You really want to have natural sleep, so try to find what is causing you to want to take a sleep aid.

Best health to you!

dont go straight for a pill, do a physical activity an hour before bed, get up and go to bed at the same time every night, or even read a book. try alot of things before going on meds to do someting you need to have control of. goodluck.

Deedee was insightful indeed.

But so you know in college studies I learned Melatonin is what is responsible for sleep. Its the natural chemical in your body so i sugest it.

St. John's wort is fine, but dont take extra amounts of it too much can be dangerous.
Definitely dont take to much , sidafects.

St. John's wort may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. Other side effects can include anxiety, dry mouth, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, headache, or sexual dysfunction.

You can take quite a bit of melatonin. Your body produces less with age wich may cause sleeping problems. No need to take more than 10 miligrams unless you have cancer.

If you take to much melatonin..............
"Side effects from taking melatonin may include changes in blood vessels that may affect blood flow, reduced sperm count, and lowering of the body's temperature (hypothermia). These side effects go away when you stop taking melatonin. Other reversible side effects may include stomach problems, headache, depression, morning grogginess, and vivid dreams."

The MOST effective one is a BIG WALK on the FRESH AIR, half an hour a day, at least. It can wash out all the stupid thoughts that wouldn't allow you to sleep well.

St John's Wort makes me feel a bit fuzzy headed, but not tired. Melatonin is more for getting to sleep - SJW is more for depression, or just when you want a little buzz.

you could also try valerian root
