Head lice (please serious answers only)?!

Question: I got this online for home remedies to kill lice... want to know what you think... bad ideas, doesn't work, does work, or something that will work besides chemicals etc.

Any comments that are not rude remarks are helfpul. I will REPORT any comments that are not real answers.
"For head lice problem wash your hair with vinegar. It will kill all the nits in two days. Apply coconut oil to your head after shampoo and condition. Add ten to fifteen drops of tea tree oil into shampoo bottle and use it daily. Rub listerine mouth wash on your head. This will kill all the lice. Massage your head with mayonnaise and comb it after 2 hours. This will kill all the lice and their eggs. Apply a mixture of lemon and butter on your head, wait for 15 seconds and then rinse your head."

Anybody have any comments about any of these remedies?

Vinegar won't do a thing to kill a louse- it will just leave you with stripped clean hair and smelling like a salad. Coconut oil will nicely condition your scalp, and still won't kill the lice- but you will smell better than you do using the vinegar. The lice will probably expect a suntan next. Tea tree oil repulses lice from hats, etc- but it's not 100% effective at killing them or the nits, and you would sure need an awful lot of it. The price alone would buy several of the regular lice kits. Listerine? Never heard of that one. Again, though- it's still mostly just water, with a bit of alcohol and flavorings. It might drownd one or two, and leave the rest pretty happy, and well- your head would smell kind of funny. But it sure beats gargling with the stuff. Mayonaise I've heard of and seen folks try. Leaves your hair nice and shiny, I'll say that for it. It doesn't kill the lice or the nits though. Lemon and butter, well- I don't think that would have much effect at all, certainly not in 15 seconds. The only home remedies I'm aware of that work call for shaving the head bald. Old timers used to wash the head with kerosene, but that's nasty and dangerous and eats the hide off your scalp. Honestly, the easiest and safest way to do in the little critters is to just buy one of the over the counter kits made for the purpose. Buy one for each member of the household. Gather up all the head related gear- hats, scarves, brushes, combs, ribbons, etc. Soak in a dilution of water and lice killer, then nuke in microwave for a few minutes. Or freeze them for two days. Get the pillowcase off the bed, wash it in hot water and bake it dry in the dryer. Use the shampoo on all the heads of the house, rinse and use the nit comb to remove all the nits you can. If you really want to be sure you got a total kill, repeat the shampoo process again in three days. Don't go after the family pet- head lice like people, not pets. Don't go wild sterilizing the house, lice like blood. They don't live in cracks, furniture, carpets, drapes or sheets, mattresses or anything else except on a human head. They don't leave a head with a good meal unless a fresh head is close by. Trust me, we see head lice all the time, usually after one of the "trusted" home remedies fail. Just cut yourself some slack and go get one. It's worth it in time, money and aggrivation- and one ruined day is all they are worth. And try to maintain a sense of humor in all of it. Lice like clean heads, and are really democratic little creatures. They like all human heads. It's no sin to catch them, just a shame to keep them. And it's really not necessary to jump through all sorts of hoops to get rid of the little darlings.

No hun, you need to go to the store and buy a lice treatment. They are less expensive them most of the things listed in that home remidy. If you have a problem, go with professional items not home rem. That is just peopls thoughts

If I were you, I'd just go to the store and buy the special shampoo for it. You shouldn't risk it because you don't know the effects of home remedies. They may kill the lice, but you never know what they will do to your hair or scalp.

The best method is to just apply hair conditioner and comb through with a very fine metal comb..
The nits are eggs attached to the hair shaft, and can't be killed by mayo or vinegar. They need to be removed.

well my brother just go rid of those nasty devils and we used a store bought lice killer and a nit comb also we disinfected out home and everything else we have so if that remedy isn't working there must be a problem i would use a store lice killer

Just go buy RID. And use the comb to make sure you get everything out, or it will just come back. Everything else if just hoping you can comb everything out, I would guess.

Lemon and butter might make a weak acid and kill them, but even dead, they will cling to your hair, so you have to comb.

There is also the shave the head method that works every time.

That's quite an elaborate way to kill lice. :/

Buy Shampoo made for killing lice. It should be in any kind of store that sells shampoos. I think pharmaceuticals would have some too. It's a sure progress that is guaranteed to work without getting smelly. =]

my friend says that the mayonnaise one is the only thing that's ever worked for her.

i seriously would just consider buying a good brand lotion or shampoo as buying all these products are just gonna be as pricey ,
but you also have to make sure to buy a fine tooth combe as well to get the eggs out as they attach to the hair,
goodluck i am so not looking forrward to my child starting shcool for this reason only lol

but i have heard about vinegar helping and teetreeoil but i believe all that otherstuff might stuff your hair up

I don't know about all of those, but I do know that mayonnaise will work. A friend of mine got lice almost every year in grade school, and her mom always used mayonnaise.

But honestly, I would just go with the store bought treatment. That's what I used when I got lice, and it worked fine. Then you don't have to deal with the huge mess and ridiculous smell of mayonnaise (plus it makes your hair greasy).

And even if you do use a home treatment, you still must make sure to get a nit comb and comb through every strand of hair. I didn't do that at first, so the lice kept coming back.

None of the home remedies kill the eggs. U really need to go the the store and get the medicated shampoo. Good Luck!!

Just shave the head and check the rest of the family too.

I wouldn't mess with chemicals.

Apply Neem oil on the hair and leave it in the hair for two hours before washing. The treatment should be repeated every day for a fortnight. The lice infection is resolved in a fortnight. Neem oil is very beneficial in treating head lice .Neem oil not only kills the lice but also prevents re-infections by destroying the eggs of the lice.

mayo or vinegar

Several popular home treatments for head lice were tested. (See below.) NONE of them were effective.

Olive oil left on over night for the head. the rest of the house will need to be treated as well as the other people. the chemical in CAT flea power will work on lice....but not on people.
