Any home remedies for.. strep throat?!

Question: Any home remedies for.. strep throat?
I'm not quite sure I have strep throat, I don't have a fever although, when I swallow, my left ear feels a bit clogged, and my throat.. somewhat is painful,
my dad brought home amoxilliin tablets not too long ago, so i'm taking one a day..
I ran out of lemons just now but i'm going to go buy some soon, anyone have any remedies they'd like to share?
Gargling salt water almost never works for me.. I don't know why.

Er, hold on a stinking minute; antibiotics aren't sweeties you know. You can't take them casually like that!

The majority of sore throats are caused by viruses. Antibiotics kill bacteria, not viruses. Even if a bacterium is the cause, antibiotics statistically make little difference to symptom duration as your immune system can generally clear the infection, regardless of whether its caused by a bacteria or a virus.

Unless you are immunocompromised, antibiotics are usually only given if the infection fails to improve after a few days and/or gets worse- which would indicate a severe infection.

So advise right now is to push fluids, take an analgesics (e.g. paracetamol and/or Ibuprofen- if you can tolerate them). You can buy anaesthetic throat sprays OTC. They will help any local discomfort.

The evidence base for gargles is lacking and salt water won't do anything.

If you develop a fever and/or symptoms fail to improve after a few days, then see your GP.

Note that the antibiotic Amoxicillin is usually avoided in this situation anyway, especially in young people because if the diagnosis is infectious mononucleosis, it will produce a rash, even in the absence of allergy to pen.

Edit: No, garlic won't help.

Garlic, "do not forget our good old Garlic, which has an excellent antiseptic effect and has the power to cure both viral and bacterial sore throat. At the first sign of a sore throat, place one clove of garlic in your mouth between your cheeks and teeth and keep it for a while. Repeat it several times a day."

I have used this often and it always works for myself and my family. Aside from sucking on a garlic clove (there is no way around smelling like garlic for a few days afterwards), you can crush up garlic, mix it with butter and spread on toast.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Before you use antibiotics to treat an infection, you must know (a) that the infection is bacterial in nature, and (b) the identity of that bacteria.

Antibiotic selection/dosing is based upon bacterial identity. They don't all work equally well against the entire spectrum, you know!
