Ideally, they should be stored in a cool, dry place. If you get the powder in the pills wet, some of them can activate and will die off quicker, but not all of them would unless the powder gets really wet. As far as storing them at room temperature, that depends on if they are heat stabilized or not (some are and some aren't)... if it says to refrigerate, they are not heat stabilized.

If the pills require refrigeration and have been out of the fridge for more than a week or two, you might as well toss them as they won't be anywhere near as viable as they used to be. If they don't need refrigeration, then they will probably be okay to take (again, if they didn't get too wet).

Probiotics are perfectly safe to take... they are the beneficial bacteria that already live in your intestinal tract. If you get more than your body can handle, it can give you loose stools for a little while, but that's your body's normal processing of the intestinal flora. Good luck and I hope I helped!
