There are no published trials or reports regarding valerian root that would implicate it as a psychedelic drug. Valerian root has been used since ancient Greece as a medicinal herb for a variety of ailments such as sleep disorder, gastrointestinal pain, and anxiety. Current research is mixed on its effect of aiding sleep disorders, but there are signs that it can make a significantly measureable improvement on a subject's sleep patterns. The recommended dosage for insomnia has been listed as being between 300 and 600 mg of liquid root extract, or 2 to 3 grams of dried valerian root.

I've never heard this before. However, Valerian helps some people sleep better and other's have used it to help treat mild depression.
