Try Claritin first, because you can buy it without a prescription. If it works for you, then you are set. If it doesn't work, go to a doctor and get a prescription for Allegra.

Keep in mind that both of these drugs do not work immediately. For me, it takes about 12-24 hours before I feel them working. Your mileage may vary, of course, but they are not like some older allergy medicines that start to work withing half an hour.

Good luck and I hope this is helpful.

I'm allergic to Claritin. If your tongue starts to tingle, stop using it. That's all I can really tell you about that one, though. Allegra works pretty well for me, but I itch and it doesn't stop that. I can't take antihistamines because they knock me out. So, I guess if that's a problem too, then consider something different. I cannot afford an allergy specialist right now, as I'm applying for disability, so I don't know what would work for that. But if your problem is coughing, itchy red watery eyes, and runny/stuffed up nose, I'd recommend Allegra. Hope that helps.

You'll have to try both separately to see which one is more effective for you. I use Allegra and love it. Claritin wasn't strong enough for me. You may also want to try Zyrtec.
