True herbs, ancient remedies, do not develop a reputation without cause. Ginkgo has been tested in clinical trials and proven effective...but it's not for everyone and doesn't help all cases of memory loss.
Ginkgo works by increasing circulation to the extremities, so it is effective for relieving chronically cold hands and feet. It is also somewhat of a blood thinner, so it helps a little with hypertension and high cholesterol. Some types of tinnitus are relieved by taking Ginkgo supplements.
Mostly it has been tested on people over age 65 and has been shown to help with the memory of a notable percentage of participants in that group. I have read one test that showed it helped the recall of a group of college students when they were given an exam about 30 minutes after ingesting 500 mg. of the herb.
One of the best products I've had experience with is called "Remember Now" and is made by Herbs, Etc. out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. (I recommend the liquid extract.)http://www.herbsetc.com/shopping/r/remem...
For trouble focusing, many people use a product containing Ginkgo & Bacopa together.
