Hello, I have been using a pycnogenol antioxidant blend for about 15 months. A formulated blend is very important as you need a mixture of fat and water soluble anti-oxidants, as well as specific vitamins, to be really effective. The product I use is called Revenol from a company called Neways.
It's hard to answer; "does it work" except to say that it works for me and I feel better than 12 months ago. When people see me now I get comments that I seem to be getting younger and not older! I like that as I actually feel younger.
Anti-oxidants do work, otherwise we wouldn't be recommended to eat 'five-a-day'. The problem is that, as recommended by the Australian government, we really need to eat a minimum of 8-10 portions of fruit or vegetables to get and stay healthy. Five portions is barely enough and is hardly aspirational stuff! It's the equivalent of the British Navy's 17th century suggestion of sucking a lime to just avoid getting scurvy! It's starvation rations.
Your lifestyle also has a major impact on the need and the results of taking antioxidants. If you are a non-smoking vegetarian with an excellent diet, who lives in a pollution free environment, then you probably do not need to supplement with anti-oxidants. On the other hand if you smoke, eat lots of BBQ, work or live in a polluted environment, then you really, really need to quit smoking and take the most powerful blend of anti-oxidants that you can get!! Your burden of free-radicals is massive, just massive. Neways have a very strong anti-oxidant called Cascading Revenol that delivers about 5000+ ORAC units per day. We typically need 3500-4000 per day and most people only get 1000-2000! Scary. Cascading Revenol was a recommended anti-oxidant in Dr Rosy O'Daniel's book; The Cancer Directory.
