I have a really bad fear of needles. Can you help me?!

Question: It's really bad. I freak out and screem anytime I see anything that even looks like a needle on the ground, or anywhere. I don't know what to do. Is this normal? Do you have any suggestions?

ok first of all..wtf rocket? that sounds psycho..
secondly, to get over your fear of needles you should..hmm..well..I guess go to the doctor. The kind in the nuthouse.

Well you can try and make a decision to change the way you think about needles. If you can't change it, then who can????
Change your thinking, it will work.

hmm i think you should go see a phycoloigist abotu your fear if that is possible. i think it would be good to. or go see a doctor. im sorry that you have this fear of needles. i had the same thing as a child but not as bad. i would freak out and scream every time i seen a needle though. I hope you can get some help! :[

Well, I'm not sure if it's normal or not but I have the same fear so I can relate. If I see a needle go into someone or me I pass out every time. I was thinking about going for professional help but I'm not sure it will work. Maybe you can look into that. Good luck and in the mean time stay away from needles!!

Start getting sewing needles and sliding them through your palm. Guitar strings work too, and they aren't needles. Learn to enjoy the feeling as it punctures the skin. Once you do, it is quite cool. I love donating blood and having my blood drawn, because you get to see this big *** needle slide perfectly into your vein, and the nearly invisible hole it makes.

Play with them. It's fun!

From my experience, most people's fear of needles comes from childhood. Some people have not having a shot or blood drawn since they were a child. As kids, shots/needles are traumatic for us, especially since we are so little and the needle is so big.
As adults, shots/needles don't hurt, but it is our memories of childhood shots that fuel this fear. I wouldn't worry too much, just don't look at the needle or watch them administer it. Consider it an accomplishment.

Well I will tell you something about a person I meet often, of all the places we meet, its the pathology lab for blood tests. While my tests are only every week or two, hers are sometimes twice a week. She is terrified by needles, sheer panic.
If I am ahead of her in the morning queues (seems we regulars like to get them done early in the morning and out of the way) I always give her my spot. Its better for her not to have to wait too long.
Her fear is real. However, despite that she does not shy away from what has to be. As with me, her results are used to monitor the impact her medications are having, looking out for the damage they do cause us and for changing med levels. So she has no choice, it must be done. She is incredibly brave because she conquers her fear as best she can. She does not hide it, because she cant. But she takes as much control of her irrational fears as she can. It gets her there, it gets the tests done and when leaving she is like a different person. Free of all that fear and the energy it takes to control it.
The staff apply site creams to lessen the sensation of the needle prick and they talk to her constantly. All that helps. But mostly she faces it and beats it herself.
So I encourage you to work on your fear. A healthy aversion to needles is fine. But if you loose it just because they are in proximity, well you need to exercise some control before things get further out of hand. If you need help and support to do that, then seek it out, there is nothing wrong in doing that, if anything it shows some acceptance to the problem and confidence to do something about it.

Be safe, be sage

This may not be of any help, but I had a huge fear of IV needles--shots & blood tests didn't bother me, but the idea of a needle staying in my arm gave me the willies. So--I decided to get over it by donating blood. The nurses at the Bloodmobile were just awesome, so supportive & encouraging. It wasn't a lot of fun, but it worked. Still gives me the willies, but I don't freak out anymore. Good luck!

i have a massive phobia of them too, and unfortunately all you can do is either therapy with/or the whole desensitization thing - slowly getting yourself used to being around them.

unfortunatly i've got a medical condition that requires constant blood tests and let me tell you the nurses stress out worse than i do when i have to go in. i'm that bad i've been given sedatives to take before i go in for one and it's still not that much better. so i'd go the therapy option if you can afford it.

otherwise have a look at the link below, it's a phobia forum and you can talk to people who also have the same needle fear as you and get some other tips on how to manage it.

good luck, i know how you feel and how much it sucks xoxo
