Take 1 benadryl......refreshed in the morning.

when i need to i will put on a show like investigators, or forensic files. i love these show but the narration is mellow and puts me to sleep (or try the history channel it does it for me too)

You don't! Instead, put your mind in a position where it wants to shut itself off. See insomnia treatments, in section 3, at ezy build, below. Use one of the relaxation methods, in bed, after lights out, on pages 2, 11, 2.c, or 2.i, but they can take some time to learn, (progressive muscular relaxation excepted) so learn and become proficient in their use during the day; an alternative is to use the EFT, in section 53, and pages 2.q, and 2.o, saying to yourself: "Even though I currently have a sleep disorder, I deeply and completely accept myself." (or choose your own wording) while you use the acupressure tapping. Find out which works best for you, in the daylight hours, so you will be prepared, come bedtime. For many people, a good idea is to develop a set "wind down" routine for the last hour before bedtime, so your unconscious mind learns that it is time to put thinking aside, and prepare for mindfulness, (awareness, without cogitation/purposeful thought) or the EFT, in preparation for sleep, but the idea with mindfulness is to not even think about sleeping: just drift off, naturally, during exercising those techniques. http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris

Try concentrating on your breathing at night. Like, breath in for 4 slow counts and out for 5, then in for 6 and out for 7, like that. and Nyquil is amazing if nothing else helps.

Try doing stuff to relax before you go to bed, like take a warm shower/bath and have some hot milk or non-caffeinated tea. DON"T watch TV or be on the computer, as both of these stimulate the mind. Reading is okay, but don't read in bed, just read before you go to bed. If you find that you are really having a lot of trouble shutting your mind off and getting enough sleep, you should probably talk to your doctor.

realx think about the beach and ocean waves a fuala you are knocked out!

The only thing that has ever stopped my mind from racing is an antidepressant.

Unfortunately, the mind isn't a switch we can turn on and off like most of us would like to believe. It isn't that simple. Sleep problems can be caused by a number of issues ranging from poor sleep hygiene (not having the right sleep environment, etc..) to a severe sleeping problem.
Is your room dark when you go to sleep? Are you doing activities that stimulate your brain before bed? You need to have a peaceful time before bed and a quiet dark place to sleep.
If your problems are deeper than that, you should consult with your doctor. You may need medication to help you sleep. Good luck.

Put yourself in your happy place.

I write in my journal before bed if I can't stop thinking. Just to get everything out. After that, I have no problem getting to sleep - and I used to have real issues with sleeping.

I happen to have a fantastic husband who has a great way of freeing my mind so l can sleep. l go off with some very pleasant thoughts indeed. I highly recommend it to anyone, BYO husband of course, mine's busy!!

Meditation works wonders. So does getting enough exercise and air in the daytime so you'll be more tired at night. Don't eat heavy food at night, and don't eat or drink anything with caffeine in it. Check out supplements for relaxation and sleep like Valerian or Melatonin (don't use both at the same time), they are natural and sold over the counter.

This answer will probably sound strange, but it works for me.

I try to avoid having thoughts which might lead to other thoughts.

I think of nothing but random gibberish, not even static like appears on television or things I can picture, nor even words. It's kind of like filling my head with the mental equivalent of quiet "white noise".

Eventually, without a thought stream keeping me awake, I fall asleep.

Just try to drink a warm glass of milk before bedtimes. A big glass of warm milk has helped me fall asleep but how?

Milk contains tryptophan- an amino acid that your body converts to serotonin (the feel-good hormone) and melatonin (the feel-sleepy hormone)- Have you ever wondered why the baby fall asleep after drinking his milk?

And do not drink a cup of coffee or tea before going to bed simply because they are stimulants, if you do- they will made you feel more alert and revived and so you can never fall asleep as easily as you like.
