What drugs are similar to lamictal?!

Question: Lamictal's original indication is for seizures. Similar medications are carbamazepine (brand name Tegretol) gabapentin (Neurontin), Trileptal, and Topamax

It has since been used and approved for bipolar disorder
Here is a link to drugs used for bipolar disorder:

[edit] Lamictal is not usually used for depression but for the mood swings of bipolar disorder. It helps prevent the depressive episodes from recurring more than treating the actual depression.

Abilify, Geodon, Depakote, Lithium, Risperdal, Neurontin, etc. Just do a search for a list of "mood stabilizers".

Lamictal is usually taken for depression. Other anti-depressants like Depakote may work. Lithium is used in treatment of bipolar illness. It is best to ask your psychiatrist or mental health provider to make sure. Even your local pharmacist can help too.

It depends what you are taking it for.

Lamictal is an anticonvulsant. If you are taking it for epilepsy, anticonvulsants like Tegretol, Depakote, Trileptal, Dilantin and some others would be good to talk to your neurologist about.

If you are taking it for bipolar, it depends on whether you are taking it to deal with depression or not. Lamictal is by far the anticonvulsant with the strongest antidepressant effects. Swapping out to something else can cause a problem if you are not able to tolerate antidepressants (I can't). Lithium is probably next in line for antidepressant qualities although it deals more strongly with the manic side of things. Trileptal and Tegretol are fairly neutrol. Depakote is mostly for rapid cycling, mixed states, and the more manic stuff. It also causes depression in some. There are a few antipsychotics that can help with depression - Abilify, Geodon, Seroquel, and Zyprexa - depending on how your body likes them (as with the other anticonvulsants). Anyway, all this should be discussed with your psychiatrist.

Lamictal is an anti-epilepsy drug. One of the original, older drugs for epilepsy is Dilantin. Dilantin works for some persons, not everyone. Dilantin is still available today and is still being used by many persons around the world. Good luck.
