this is too broad a question...depends what mental disorder
Both
One event can trigger a predisposition to a mental disorder or one event can cause one as in PTSD or also
A lifetime of events can lead to the development of a mental disorder
I think it depends. As for me, I never had any idea I was suffering from any sort of disorder; it seemed inherent in me, therefore recognizing when it truly began to surface is difficult. Doctors can pick out things from my childhood that are strong indicators of bipolar, as well as target the points in my life when the symptoms really began to emerge. A disorder is genetic, so it is technically always "there." I am sure the point at which it is noticed or made apparent varies to a great extent as to the disorder itself.
IMO it's gradual. some people might not even realize they HAVE a mental disorder until something happens.
i've slowly gotten worse over the years, myself.
but i suppose if someone has something REALLY horrible happen to them, it might trigger some kind of psychotic break.
Mine was gradual. I have clinical depression that went untreated for about 15 years. In the end, I really went nuts and ended up being diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder. I was told by my psychiatrist that my worsening depression caused me to become schizo in the end.
Schiz, bipolor, and personality disorders almost always have foretelling symptoms that aren't recognized until after the illnesses are diagnosed. They virtually never suddenly appear.
