Should I tell my boss about my mental health problems?!

Question: Should I tell my boss about my mental health problems!?
I was signed off work for two weeks due to depression, but I asked the doctor not to put depresison on the sick line because I didn't want them to know!. I checked back in with my doctor today and she wanted to sign me off for 2 more weeks or get me to return to work gradually or work part-time for while!. While that sounds good, I don't want anyone at work to know I am having problems, so I said I wanted to go straight back to work!. I'll have a meeting with my boss when I get back tomorrow, do you think I should tell her I suffer from depression and anxiety and need to change what I do at work to reduce my stress!? Or should I just say that I want a change because I've been doing this job for over two years and I want a break!?

Should I be totally honest and tell her how badly work affects me!? Or should I cover it up and try to get around the problem without revealing what the real problem is!?

What would you do!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
don't say a word!. You'll label yourself!.

It's not like a broken leg where the perception is that it'll get better!. It absolutely will label you!. You'll be the last person in the building to be offered promotion because it'll be perceived as your inability to handle stress, hence the job itself!. The workplace is full of stories about people being discriminated against because of stress related problems!. Your duty (in the real world) is to yourself first and foremost!. I know it's not trendy to be selfish, but you should be!. You'll regret any such disclosure!.!.I guarantee it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

#1: ask the human resources manager to sit in on the meeting!. this is good for 2 reasons: you'll have a witness about what you say, and HR will make sure it's kept confidential, and will note it in your file!.

#2: be honest!. let them know that you've got emotional problems, and that they're interfering with work!. if you work anywhere with any sense of decency, and anywhere that follows the law, they are required and should adjust your work, along with recommendations from your doctor, so that things can be more comfortable for you!.

don't hide it from your boss!. it may happen again, and you may need to tell them, again, what's going on!.
i've been through this!. it's uncomfortable, and i thought they would flip out and fire me, but they were really professional about it, and adjusted my work so that i would be under less stress!. also, i have a really hard time when i am not recognized for my work!.!.!. we don't get a lot of praise, so i asked if they could make an effort to recognize the hard work of everyone, and be sure to point out specific things that they are happy with!. it's made the general morale a lot better, and for me it's been really helpful!.

those are just my thoughts though!. i hope you get the kindness and professionalism you deserve!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

you should say you want a change because of the routine that has been installing!.i wouldn't tell her nothing about this issue!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I wouldn't!. Not unless you know her personality and that she won't mention it to anyone!. I don't think they have a right to know that!. My dad had surgey for cancer and no one at his work knew that's what he was having surgery for!. Now, he is part owner in the comoany BUT still!. He works there!. And he just told them he was having surgery but not for what!.

I would not mention it!. If it gets out, who knows what people will think!. Find a different way to say it without actually saying you are depressed!.

I wouldn't tell my current boss even though he may not mention it to anyone!. Just for the simple fact that I called in once because I had pink eye!. He told everyone and the girl that shared my desk acted like I had some STD!. I had cleaned my desk with antibacterial products and who knows, I could have gotten it from her! But it really pissed me off when I found out everyone knew!. It wasn't a big deal, do everyone didn't need to know!. People talk, so I'd be careful what you say to your boss!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

What do you think her attitude would be!. Can you talk to in confidence!. If yes, by all means explain your problem!. Otherwise it may be time to change jobs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

being stressed out due to your job is not mental illness!. talk to your boss and explain what is causing all this stress!. explain to them that you want to keep your job at a different level!. you will be surprised how much they will work with you!.good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you work for a humane boss in a humane workplace, then there is no reason you can't tell them!. I told my boss and HR Manager one day after I had had an embarassing episode at work!. But they didn't hold it against me because I was one the hardest workers in the whole company!. They were VERY understanding, and I will never forget their kindness!. See, it works out sometimes!. You have to do the deciding though, since you know what kind of place you work in!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is a tough one because on the one hand you need changes at work to help with your mental status, but on the other hand you might be worried that your boss will stereotype you as "crazy" if you start throwing mental health words around!.

In my experience, saying that you're suffering from anxiety-related problems is something that most people will understand!. Explaining this to your boss and asking for a change in how things are at work seems like a good plan!. Before you bring it up maybe have a few ideas of your own for small changes at work that would help you, so that you can offer these ideas during your meeting!.

Depression is less understood by people!. They think you are "sad" and that you should just pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get over it!. Unless your boss has suffered from depression there might not be an understanding there about just how complex and debilitating this can be!. But you know your boss best!.

It does sound like you're getting good care and have a sympathetic doctor!. Good luck getting some changes at work!Www@Answer-Health@Com

jeez i dont know, becuase i;m having the same quandry at the moment!. i've been diagnosed with CFS, which includes stress and depression, basically some days i just cant face getting out of bed, i'm moody, tired and quite agressive some days!.!.this has of course affected my work but my collegues dont know!. on days like this i'll pull a sickie because i feel like death and when my boss says whats wrong, i say a sore throat! for example to really try and explain whats wrong would take too long!.
does your employer have any kind of health dept!. i'm lucky becuase we have occ health who i am going to speak to in confidence!. you have the added worry of your boss not being understanding and telling them could make things worse adding to your stress!. only you know how he/she will react!.!.!.nice guy!? would be compasionate, which would ease your mind, nasty guy would compound your problems!.
good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

This is really dicey!. Mental illness stigma in society is bad enough, but unfortunately in the workplace it can bring grief!. I returned after being off for 9 years (lost my job due to depression and too much time off - they said it was a lay-off!?), then very ill!. Anyways, returned to work finally, and I wouldn't breathe a word to anyone about my illness!. I've become friends with a few people, and I wouldn't even disclose to them for fear of reprisals!. It isn't fair!. Should it be another illness such as cancer or heart disease, who would fear disclosing their illness!.

In my opinion, I would remain tight-lipped!. It really is no one's business why you were off - just say "for medical reasons"!. There is a couple of articles in my blog and other articles (news and personal) if you wish to take a peek:

If you're not ready to go back, take the additional two weeks if you think it'll make a difference!.

Have HR involved and let them know it is depression!. You are protected under the ADA, but your employer needs to know in order for you to have that protection!. What the protection provides is grounds to litigate if you are dismissed or discriminated against because of your disorder!. That does not always stop employers from taking wrongful action, however!. So, weigh what you know about your employer against your decision on how to proceed!. Unfortunately, not telling comes with potential set of consequences that might be worse than telling!. Then again, some employers are very accommodating!. Mine has been, but only my boss knows!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You need to inform your boss!. There is such a thing called discrimination that will not allow your boss to let you go for having depression!. However, i would recomend that you take someone into the meeting with you, another co-worker or your HR manager so that things to get made up and you are protected from any discrimination that might occur!. However, you MUST tell you boss so that any and all adjustments can be made!. Also it is good to tell the boss so that if a change in your work occurs he/she will know why and be able to help you out possible!.!.!.!. Good Luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

No, don't tell them, I told my last boss I had depression and ocd, and I basically got fired!.

LuisaxxWww@Answer-Health@Com

I would let them know, but it depends on the relationship you have with them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Take the time off work and don't tell them why!. Get your self the sack that way then you will be able to claim job seekers allowance!. That will give you time to recover and find a job what suits you more and were your going to be happy!. It's alright this happens to the best of us!. Think off yourself and only yourself thats how the people at work get buy!. Good Luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
