Can you have more than one psychiatric illness at once?!

Question: Can you have more than one psychiatric illness at once!?
I'm just wondering, because it seems like most people (including psychiatrists) always expect all the symptoms under one diagnosis!.I don't see why you couldn't have two at once, am I wrong!?

And I'd love some more specific advice!.!.!. My psychiatrist is almost positive I'm bipolar II and I agree; I have the mood swings, the fast speech, racing thoughts, etc!. But there's still some things that don't fit!.
I was on depakote (a mood-stabilizer) until last week, and while I was on it my psychiatrist actually changed his mind and thought I had anxiety!. A ton of the symptoms fit, but then when I went off the depakote I became hypomanic and he's now almost positive I'm bipolar!. But I have a lot of symptoms of anxiety still fit!. For example, the mood swings explain most of my problems, but I still have strong feelings of dread, and I was feeling very afraid and on edge even as I was in my elated manic mood!.

So is it possible that I just have both!? Has anyone ever heard of thisWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Yes, it's possible (and not uncommon) to have more than one mental disorder on Axis I of the multiaxial system used for diagnosing!. Anxiety often occurs with other disorders, and unfortunatley sometimes is overlooked!. For example, an adolescent might have both a conduct disorder and an anxiety disorder (seen with kids who get violent when confronted-think of the fight or flight response to danger, they are really anxious and scared, not just "bad" kids)!. An adult might have both OCD and Schizophrenia!. A combination like you decribe is entirely possible!. There are also many people with anxiety and other Axis I diagnoses that also have an Axis II personality disorder, such as Borderline Personality Disorder!.

Comment on Dual Diagnosis: 520 is incorrect!. Her comment would only apply if one of the diagnoses was substance abuse!. Dual diagnosis specifically refers to when a person has both a mental disorder and a substance abuse disorder!. See multiple links below if clarification is needed!.

cassanova made a good point!. Some diagnoses can not co-occur, while others can!.

Edit:
My thought is that you've been in treatment for a while if Bipolar II has been diagnosed!. I have included a link below that discusses the possible relationships between Bipolar Disorder and anxiety!. It is possible that your psychiatrist sees your anxiety as a bipolar symptom!. Sometimes, it can be just that!. Other times, it is a separate condition!. Differentiating the two can take some time!. The link for this information is the very last link!. I hope you find it helpful!.

If you believe you're not getting the treatment you need, and you have described honestly your symptoms to your doctor and/or therapist, it may be time to get another opinion!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes you can have more the one disorder!. ANxiety and bipolar symptoms overlap a lot!. If you were being treated for bipolar and still experienceing anxiety symptoms it would stand to reason!. That said you probably need to add a medication or change one of your antidepressants that will help more with the anxiety symptoms!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, you can!. A person can have multiple diagnoses!. Professionals use the DSM IV system when diagnosing patients!. It is a system of codes that correspond with different mental health conditions!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think it's possible!. I have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Panic Disorder, so I don't see why you couldn't be Bipolar and have Anxiety!.
