Bipolar Disorder - A new buzzword?!

Question: Bipolar Disorder - A new buzzword!?
Does anyone else feel like bipolar is being over used and generally in the wrong context!?

Twice in the past week alone, I've seen 2 answers where people have used bipolar when talking about voilent, aggressive people!. Once even went as far as to say the kids who carry knives are probably bipolar and can't help it!

My husband has bipolar and I constantly have to tell him not to be ashamed, and now it seems to be this buzzword at the moment and is being used in completely the wrong way!.

Celeb mags "diagnose" so many celebrities with bipolar because they do something a bit strange - yet before Kerry Katona no-one had heard of it!.

Does this annoy/upset anyone else!? I just think there is enough stigma attached to this illness and people are just making it worse!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My son has bipolar and with medication he doesn't become manic!. I also tell him it is nothing to be ashamed of!. He is one of the most gentle people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing!. He is 25 yrs old and a joy in my life I can't describe!. He has loads of friends but doesn't share that he has bipolar!. I believe its because of stupid people who may or may not have Md
after their name who have caused people to be paranoid of mental illness!. I try to voice my opinion about my son and others whenever I read about being aggressive or violent people using knives or anything!. I really hurts me as a parent to read negative things about this illness!. So we must keep typing my dear and defending the ones we love until the word is used with more kindness!. Just remember your not the only one who gets upset when reading the garbage out there!. I'm with you, sweetie!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

YES - that stupid Jean Slater on Eastenders just makes things worse!.

It is being used as a buzz-word just now thanks to people like Kerry Katona raising awareness of this condition!.

It does upset me but the term "Bipolar" is better than "Manic Depression" as it was previously called, insinuating people diagnosed with it are "Maniacs"

Its taken over from the buzz-word "Schizo" which people reffered to as violent crazed people when I was in school and in fact my own Dad was schizophrenic, but wouldn't have hurt a fly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes it seems to be taking over from schizophrenic being used as a derogatory term for violent or badly behaved people!.But what can you expect from society in general, when Police,Psychiatrists, social services, mental health workers and an endless list of other agencies hate mentally ill people, the Government being the worst!. They're OK when you play the part and be a pathetic, frightened, crying, hiding in a corner type!.Most mental illness isn't like that( I was)
and if you step out of line they cause you so much trouble, that's if you can get any help in the first place!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

it doesnt annoy me personally, but i can understand why it would annoy you

theres a lot of ignorance in society about mental illness in general

its like when people say someone who stabs random strangers must be a paranoid schizophrenic, and then society thinks everyone with PS is a potential murderer, which is not the case

if i were you or your husband i would tell people that (as you may know) one of the most intelligent people in the country has bipolar

stephen fry

he did a documentary about it on BBC!. if you havent seen it i would definitely recommend it, its brillWww@Answer-Health@Com

It bothers me also!. Every time I hear people, who aren't doctors, say someone is bipolar because they do something violent makes me afraid to admit that I am bipolar!. I think that all this negative attention makes those who need help afraid to get it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

my aunt has bipolar sindrom!! i dont like her! she mean and yea with the meds she can be nice and she can be really mean i dont think every one they diagnoses has it i thnk the use a lot of things too offten to explain things that they dont know!Www@Answer-Health@Com

it annoys me a lot, i work in mental health services and i think that the media can portray mental health in a very negative light!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It was often overlooked as a treatable problem!. I think that a person history needs to studied more to determine if bipolar is the culprit or not!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm newly diagnosed with bipolar but and loathed to tell people about it as the new "stigma" that as wrongly been created about it!.

i totally agree with you, everyone is using things as and excuse for bad, violent behaviour!. and leaving "us" with the "real" disorder to bear the brunt of it!.

i am NEVER violent and run my own business single handed yet i cope!. it seems to me that if your not from a broke home or such as you have bipolar and that explain why you behave the way you do!.

modern society are so quick to pigeonhole people and label them incorrectly it fairs badly on the people who do have the condition!.

sadly in the world the way it is unless you comply to "the standards" you dont "fit in" and i think that rubbish!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder 8 years ago, and I do all I can to keep this fact out of my everyday life due to the very same stigmas you are referring to!. When I was first learning about my disease, it was not a common term and very few people knew much about it!. It definitely seems like now suddenly its everywhere - I've had several discussions about this very recently in fact!. This misuse of the term as an insult - about someone acting moody or undesirable, "she's so bipolar!." - has gotten up there with other similar undeserved terms such as "thats so gay" and "you're retarded"!. Though I would probably be validated in doing so, I don't get upset when I hear these comments portraying being bipolar in such a negative light!. I know none of these people mean anything by it, and I would be hypocritical as I've called my fair share of things "retarded"!.

I don't necessarily get upset about there being over-exposure about Bipolar disorder in the news!. In cases such as Britney Spears, while not great as far as giving a well rounded view of the disease, it was very effective in showing the darker side of things and how people with mental illness need a good support system!. I feel it did a lot to better educate people!. However, I do get frustrated with instances like the one Kerry Katona!. For that matter, any diagnosis of a person given by someone who is not a doctor - whether as an observation about a star by a tabloid or based on a short paragraph written by a blogger - frustrates me!. Unless you have the proper schooling, experience, and background on the subject, you aren't qualified to tell a person what's wrong with them!.

Along with noticing an increase in usage of the word, I also feel like there has been an increase in the number of people being diagnosed with bipolar!. It also seems they're starting younger!. Have others noticed this!? And it doesn't seem to be limited to bipolar - the number of all mental health diagnoses seem to be rising!. Any ideas why this could be!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yeah, I think it's a new buzzword!.!.!. This makes me angry!.

No, it makes me happy!

ANGRY!!!
