Is bipolar disorder a kind of epilepsy?!

Question: Is bipolar disorder a kind of epilepsy!?
Or in the same family!? Some experts think there's a link or overlap there!.

For example: Bipolar disorder seems to involve the temporal lobe like epilepsy!. People with epilepsy (correct me if I'm wrong) often have mood swings, and they actually get diagnosed with bipolar at rates much higher than the population in general!. They also both respond to a lot of the same (anticonvulsant) meds, unlike any other disorders I know of!.

I don't know what it's like to have epilepsy but - I know this isn't evidence - it often FEELS like something is physically seizing up in my head when I'm in the midst of an episode!.

I know the science hasn't advanced far enough to say for sure, but in your opinion do you think the two kinds of disorder will end up grouped with each other someday!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Very interesting question indeed!. While I was researching medicines my son is currently taking, I , too, noticed that the meds are also used for bipolar illness!. However, the two illnesses are as different as day and night!.

Epilepsy deals with seizures and bipolar illness is mood swings from depression to full blown mania!. My son has just suffered his third major full-blown manic episode in the last year!. The doctor prescribed and is treating him with zyprexa which I noticed is a seizure medication!. Probably they issue the same medication because, as you stated, it affects the temporal lobe!.

Very interesting question I must say!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No!. Epilepsy is with seizures and BP is mood swings!.

If they are connected like you say, the disorders probably just affect the same region of the brain!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
