Is anyone familiar with bi-polar disorder? ?!

Question: Is anyone familiar with bi-polar disorder!? !?
So, recently I found out that my father was admitted into the psych ward!. He has an extreme case of bi-polar disorder, and unfortunately hit a low that almost took his life!. Thank god he is getting the help that he needs, and will soon be able to get back home and have his family back!.

My mother, on the other hand, I believe also has an extreme case of bi-polar disorder but denies all the facts of her symptoms and refuses any help!. And unfortunately, I think she will always deny this and not get any of the help that she really needs!.

My question for someone familiar with this disease is, should I get evaluated!? I have heard that bi-polar disorder is hereditary, is this true!? I have noticed small things with myself that could in fact be the symptoms of bi-polar disorder, but they are very mild!.

Should I get evaluated anyways just to make sure!?
Or should I wait until I get a little bit older!?
I'm only 22, but I am ready to get help if I need it!.

Thanks!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi there,

Unfortunately, I'm a little TOO familiar with bipolar disorder!.

I'm sorry to hear about your family's troubles!.

If you're not having any problems, then I'd advise against seeing a doctor!. If your moods start to become a problem, get help immediately, but until that happens there's nothing anybody can do (there's no problem to solve, as it were)!.

I would advise getting counselling, though!. A tendency towards bipolar disorder is genetic, but many episodes are triggered by stressful life events!. Considering that you have at least one parent with a serious psychiatric condition, I presume that you're going through a stressful time at the moment, and have done in the past!. Seeing a counsellor is one of the best forms of mental illness prevention - having someone impartial to talk to, who will help you sort through your problems, is really useful!. They can also help you monitor your moods so that you know straight away if you're becoming ill!.

I'd also recommend maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise!.

If you do that - counselling and a healthy lifestyle - then you reduce your risk of becoming bipolar!. You can't eradicate the risk completely, but if you put a support system in place now then if it does happen, you are at least prepared, which immediately puts you in a much better position than many people!.

Most importantly, don't worry!. There is a chance that you will get this illness, but there is also a chance that you won't!. And if you do get it, it's treatable!. And you will be prepared for it!.

Relax, and enjoy your life!. Although I would seriously advise against recreational drugs and heavy drinking, both of which are known to worsen existing mental health problems, and induce dormant ones!.

Making sensible decisions now goes a long way in preparing you for the worst in the future!. And even if you don't develop bipolar, a healthy lifestyle and counselling will certainly do you no harm!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

if both your parents have bi- polar, then you have a 46% chance of having it as well!.

It wouldn't hurt to get evaluated!. That way you'll know one way or the other!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Let me state first that I am NOT a therapist or other licensed professional!. I do, however, have the experience of looking up LOTS of info on bi polar!. I am researching it as a possible issue for someone I know!. And I've been doing it for a while!.

First of all, it sounds like your mom is right on target for having it!. Not all sufferers deny it that strongly, but it is still a common issue - 'no, I do not have a problem' denial!. If you see the same symptoms that your dad has in your mom's actions, there is certainly a strong chance that she has it!.

Evaluated, wouldn't hurt!. It could give you tips on how to take care of it should you get it!. Or even how to deal with it if you think it's trying to sneak up on you!. Yes, like most medical issues, it does tend to have an inherently hereditary passing!. But that is not in any way a definite marker for the future!. Noticing small things could go either way rather easily!. But at least you are willing to tackle it should it come your way, and you are taking note of it's future possibility!.

Any way it goes, you need to talk to someone immediately!. Something to help your mom, something to help allay your fears!. Don't wait!. Getting evaluated now, and starting to talk about all of it before it festers can do yourself wonders!. And it may get your mom some help too, before it should get as bad as your dad!. It is quite fortunate that he is getting some help!.

One problem with this, as well as other mental illnesses, is that there really isn't an 'early stage' to catch it!. Some develop it later in life, with different factors than those who develop it earlier on!. With some physical-medical conditions, you can find ways to keep an eye on it with tests such as EKGs, lab work, etc and know within a relatively short amount of time what is going on!. Having a bad day at work can make it feel like you could be developing it, but watching for, and catching, those symptoms takes time!. There has to be something resembling a pattern, not just of lows but highs and in-betweens and even mixes!. It would be extremely hard to make a diagnosis of just a week or two of occurrences!.

Sorry, didn't mean to yap on like that!. I can get chatty at times!. Anyway, hope that I was still at least a little helpful here!

Peace and blessings for hope and the best still yet to come!Www@Answer-Health@Com
