It's a good idea to avoid getting hit in the head. Yes, it is possible for something like that to cause brain damage, you don't have to become unconscious. The brain is kind of mushy and soft, and banging it around the inside of your skull can cause the neural fibers to tear, blood vessels to break, etc.

Also: pretty much all brain damage is "permanent". Getting hit over and over again is thought to cause early dementia and other unpleasant side effects (think boxers and football players), however getting hit once or twice isn't going to kill you. Don't worry too much about the other day (see a doctor if symptoms of concussion emerge), but do try to protect your skull. Useful stuff in there!
