Is there any specific personality disorder that could cause someone to say um an!

Question: Is there any specific personality disorder that could cause someone to say um and erm, hundreds of times daily?
My mum says um, um, um,um, er, er, er, er, er constantly. Before and after every single sentence. She is chronically slow, dithering, and in another world. But as she is a district nurse she must be with it. So what could be wrong with her?

Lack of confidence is the usual cause of that. She's not sure of what she has to say.

Unexpected, some people simply have that as a speech habit. I, for example, often say "You know what I mean" often. There was a teacher in my high school who said "Do you understand now" after every single sentence. I had a college physics professor who would say "Are we together" about 10 to 20 times during each class. One teenager I used to know said "um" a lot, especially when speaking in public. So it may just be a speech habit that she developed over the years. If you are concerned, though, you might want to politely mention it to her. If she is willing, she could be examined by a speech pathologist. Otherwise, I would drop the issue. Peace to you.

It doesn't sound like a personality disorder, it sounds like depression, stress, fatigue, or the side effect of a medication.

Have her checked for Alzheimer's. See what medications (if any) she is taking.

OCD or tourettes. Most likely not. Those things are hard to miss.
