Has anyone been diagnosed with bipolar or bpd before they turned 18?!

Question: Has anyone been diagnosed with bipolar or bpd before they turned 18?
What extremes did it take in order for you to get your diagnosis? Because I know professionals are very reluctant to diagnose before the age of 18

Answers:

Yes I was hospitalized and diagnosed...however a year later the diagnoses has gone and been changed from BPD.

* Actually much less than a year later

Bipolar disorder is becoming more of a diagnosis when it applies to someone who is under the age of 18. Many mental health professionals have not been trained in this field of mental health.

When this diagnosis is made for someone under that age, it may be very difficult to locate someone who does this type of mental health treatment.

You need to get in touch with the Association of Psychiatrists or Association of Psychologists in order to locate the name of someone that they can refer you to who has this type of practice.

I used to work as a Registered Nurse in both adult and adolescent psychiatric units for 20 years. It's been 10 years since I worked in that field but up until then it was against the rules of the American Psychological Association and The American Psychiatric Association to diagnose someone under 18 y/o with Bi Polar Disorder. This is because normal teen age behavior can include symptoms of fluctuating moods and emotions.

Bi Polar Disorder has a cluster of symptoms ranging from very mild to severe. If you have the disorder I hope you have minimal symptoms. I suspect that if you were hearing voices, your speech was pressured and disorganized speech, had delusions, and was very hyperactive.

A person should be treated before they get that bad. I would try different doctors until I found one that would either diagnose you with Bipolar Disorder or at least give You the medications that help that.

I hope that I have written something that has been helpful. God bless you and I encourage you to try different doctors until you find one that can help you,
