What to expect when living with a recovering addict?!

Question:

What to expect when living with a recovering addict?

my mom recently told me that she's been addicted to painkillers and is now in detox. this totally explains her mood swings and inability to sleep but she's really treating me like crap now. she had JUST gotten done telling me that i can talk to her about anything when all of a sudden she wanted to talk about a touchy subject that she knows i don't like to talk about and when i calmly and politely told her that i didn't really want to talk about it she flew off the handle and said "well thats fine when you want to talk about ANYTHING then you can just TYPE it to someone who cares". this is TOTALLY not like her she has always been nothing but a caring, supportive person.

i guess what i'm asking is what else can i expect while she's going through this and is there anyone out there who was an addict or is close to one who has experienced something similar?
also, i'm going back to school in SC and don't want her to be alone and going through detox. how long do you think this will take?

Answers:

Yep, I'm a recovering addict of about 10 years now. She and you have a long road ahead of you. I was addicted to painkillers and it took me a good 3 months to get back to some semblance of normal. Of course the first week is probably the worst trying to get the dope out of your system and brain. She's going to be moody, irritable, depressed, lethargic at times, probably will not want to eat much, will feel like she's got the worst flu of her life. sweaty, diarrhea, the works. You just have to deal with it and she will, too. She MUST get into a program that will help her STAY off of the painkillers. They are horribly addicting and will kill her in short order if she stays on them or gets back on them. I feel for you sweetie.
