I need help/advice?!

Question:

I need help/advice?

ok so to sum it up, I have a huge phobia of needles, doctors and hospitals. so my mother called me today telling em that she made an appointment with the eye doctor tonight, well for us. i said no i'm not going to do it, i'll see what the doctor does to her and then decide if i want to be done. but it is my decision. my problem is, i know i dont have to do it at all, i'm jsut going with my mother to see what the doctor will do to her, but i still have palpitations thinking of it and i went to the bathroom 2 times ever since that call...i keep on telling myself "you are just going there with her, not for you. you are going to see what will be done, they will not do anything unless you want them to, your decision"...i keep on saying that like a mantra but it's not working...it works for 5 sec but then panick mode...any advice or suggestion??

Answers:

Wow, this baffles me. I am a healthcare provider (Respiratory Therapist) and I have a VERY hard time understanding fears I suppose because I deal with the worst of the worst on a daily basis. My suggestion to you is to figure out why you have the phobia. Needles CANNOT harm you. The hardly hurt, doctors are here to help you, and they rarely hurt anyone (that's the nurses job :) ) and hospitals are a place of healing. Will you die by going to the eye doctor? Hell no. Will you die by getting a needle poke? Nope, never. So you need to be realistic about this. you will not suffer or have any (real) harm come to you by going to the doctor (ESPECIALLY the EYE doctor!) or getting a shot. Nothing. It lasts a very small amount of time. Medicine is an amazing and wonderful thing, treat it as so.
