How Do You Be Calm?!
Question:
How Do You Be Calm?
I just need some advice on how to stay calm under extreme anxiety. Keep the heart rate down and the mind at peace. Any pointers out there?
Answers:
Walking is great for an anxious mind. It's rhythmic and helps your brain's chemistry to handle stress. Some people say that exercise such as yoga helps, but I haven't tried that.
Being in a place where you can experience nature is also calming. It doesn't have to be a jungle or an island somewhere--even a visit to a plant store or sitting outside and taking a look at the plants and birds around you has been shown to calm people. Water always relaxes me--a lake, a river, even the sound of a fountain helps.
I've recently read that knitting is calming, it's repetitive motions replicating that soothing that walking does. I suppose that other forms of needlework might do the same thing, IF you aren't stressed by needlework that is.
The last thing I do is remember that the world is a very large place and human beings have been on it for a long time. It's unlikely that the problems that I'm so upset by are worse than most people's. Taking a look at the night sky reminds me that the universe is huge and my problems and I aren't so very big in it.
I hope you feel better.
