Question:

I have had Bipolar for 11 years, my new husband of 4 years doesn't know how to deal with me when I am depresse

He gets very angry,it's as though he blames me for the way I am. I try to talk to him when I feel ok, but it,s the same again when I next feel down. I understand how difficult it must be to know what to do but he makes me feel very guilty for being ill which I feel prolongs the depression. How can I help him to understand. Please help (desperate)

Answers:

He needs to go to a good counsellor with you.
He gets angry because that is how people behave around depressed people. It is a reflection of what is inside of you. They can't understand how you can go from being seemingly ok to feeling like you're in a bubble with the rest of the world outside and unable to reach you.
You need to be either on your own whilst depressed or make him understand that the cloud will pass because you aren't your illness.
Read books written by Dorothy Rowe such as "Depression - the Way Out of Your Prison.
You need to understand the illness better or you will remain in these vicious cycles until YOU decide it's time to get better.
Depressed people have an over inflated sense of responsibility and are overwhelmed with guilt and a feeling of "not being good enough".
Have you tried cognitive therapy?
