Friend with a problem...should he seek a therapist? would like some opinions bef!

Question:

Friend with a problem...should he seek a therapist? would like some opinions before i give him this advice?

A good friend of mine whom i've grown up with is 26 and has been single for just barely over a year now. He's had a bad relationship before so at first he was okay with being single then he had on/off feelings about wanting a gf. I think recently, with so many of our friends/acquaintances getting into serious relationships and marriages, he's been more concerned with it. I'm currently in a relationship myself, and whenever we hang out, its usually me,my gf,my friends and their gf/bf and then him. I feel really bad;I mean girls used to find him attractive but now he doesn't wanna go out and meet new people. We invite him out to party but he's always reluctant and when he does he doesn't go socialize w/ my friends. Yeah, he's insecure and afraid of rejection but I don't think there's anything that I can do to help.I'm sure he'd like a girl in his life but it seems that he's become clueless with this stuff.Think he needs to see a therapist? Is this an issue worth addressing to a thearpist?

Answers:

Advising a friend to see a therapist is a sensitive matter. What if he took offense to that? Even though he may indeed need to see one, you must broach the subject gently. Also, I think this happens to a lot of people and we eventually get out of the 'funk' we were in. But I worried that he is withdrawing and if he continues, it could only get to be a worse state of depression - because that is what it is - he is depressed, and probably, and I hope, just temporarily. You know him better then us, if he would accept your advice, then give it. If not, take the time to ease the idea to him. In fact, you could tell him to mention it to a regular family or general practitioner before actually seeing a shrink. I'm glad that you are a good, concerned friend.
