Synesthesia?!?!
Question:
Synesthesia?!?
ok, i was wondering why i was associating colors with names, numbers, days, months.. etc.. and associating colored shapes with sounds. i found it was called synesthesia..(i think i spelled that right) anyway, i told my friend that, because she was wondering why i said her name was dark, emerald green, and she just doesn't get it, saying "oh. so it's a disease?" but it's not! it's a condition!
is there anyone out there that has synesthesia? what did you do to tell your friends about it?

even when i tell her it's a condition, she refers to it as a disease and doesn't understand

i do "see" things in color. when i see a name/word i see the color of it in my minds eye. when i hear music i actually see the shape and color of it, floating around me. by associating, i meant that each number, name, word has it's own color and texture and such.
Answers:
how acute is your synesthesia? It usually is a little more than association, and to my understanding applies at the perception level. It is difficult for a synesthete to NOT 'see' such things as you mentioned in color, for example...
Edit. There are experiments to determine a synesthete. Try this one. Take a 'sea' of digital type 'fives' (5)s on a piece of paper. Throw in a few digital twos (2)s and to a synesthete they are very easy to spot (as they show up as a different color), but to a normal person very difficult. A 'mind's eye' does not qualify as synesthesia, it is more basal than that; as I said, it is occurs a pre-processed perception level.
