Flashback versus Memory?!

Question:

Flashback versus Memory?

I recently began talking to a counselor about some traumatic events that have happened recently.
When he took my history he asked about my childhood, etc. I told him about a couple things. I was quiet while he wrote some notes and I was thinking about an incident where I was beaten and trying to decide whether or not to tell him about it. He said very quietly "Do you have flashbacks?"
When he asked the question I became aware that this is exactly what was happening. But before this time I just thought they were memories. Is it possible for him to tell that I was having a flashback? Or was it just a question, a guess?
So then I started thinking about the things that were maybe flashbacks and realized that I remembered many details, step by step. Then I thought about happy things and those memories were just glimpses; not detailed at all.
So is that what the difference is? I am visual so I remember every step of being beaten. But with happy stuff I just see a quick glimpse, asaphoto

Answers:

Trauma memories are stored in the brain differently than other types of memories. In fact, trauma memories are stored in their complete vivid form. That is one reason why they seem so real and vivid when they are remembered. Part of the work of therapy is to lessen the intensity. Talk to your therapist.
