Asking For A Therapist?!

Question:

Asking For A Therapist?

How do you ask your parents for a therapist? A couple years ago i saw a shrink because i was at an age where i believed that the world revoled around me and since then have learned and stopped seeing her. A around a year ago i started having some issues that i dont really want to talk about and since then i have stopped but it still haunts me. My parents found out and threatened to make me see a shrink, i countined in secret and then finally gave it up. My mom is kind of sentistive because i''m supposed to feel confromtable talking to her and i don't. I don't want to hurt her but i dont know how to tell her that i want someone, as in a professional to talk to. How do i ask without hurting her (and my dad too) feelings? I want a shrink because i just want to beable to trust someone, should i say that? Please, Please, Please Help.

Answers:

I agree with the previous poster you could see your previous therapist if you liked her and found her helpful. You could also ask her for a referal to some other therapist. If you have a family doctor (M.D,, D.O., etc.) you could ask him/her for a referal as well. If you attend school they should have a school psychologist on staff (you might have to request this through the school counselor, etc) but the school is another place to get referals to a therapist.

How you bring this up to your parents is up to you since you know them better than anyone else. What would happen if you said that? What do you think you could say that would let them know you needed somoene to talk to outside of them and still would hurt their feelings as little as possible?
Keep in mind that open communication is not always about protecting other people from having their feeling hurt but about dealing with the problem(s) in the best way possible.

I don't know but I wonder if your mom would be impressed that you trusted her enough to be able to ask for her help with finding a therapist.
